Moses M. Spence played football for West Georgia College in 1951. Little did he know that 65 years later, he would be honored with a scholarship in his name at his beloved alma mater.

The Moses M. Spence Football Scholarship Fund was established by the Atlanta Postal Credit Union in recognition of his long years of service. Spence was recently notified that the endowment had been established in his name, thanks to employees at the Atlanta Postal Credit Union, who donated an additional $3,500 to the $50,000 scholarship.

Matthew Clay, executive director of UWG Athletic Foundation, Inc., attended the surprise celebration for Spence and presented him with a certificate and a football jersey.

“We are so appreciative of the Atlanta Postal Credit Union for establishing the Moses M. Spence Football Scholarship to honor Mr. Spence,” Clay said. “As a former West Georgia football player from 1951-53, Mr. Spence has a passion for UWG and UWG football.”

The UWG head football coach, with the director of athletics, will award the scholarship annually to benefit one or more deserving students on the UWG football team.

Any person, firm, or corporation is allowed to add to this fund, whether it be by cash gift, by will or other gifts or securities or real estate. All contributions should be made payable to the UWG Athletic Foundation, Inc. and designated for the Moses M. Spence Football Scholarship Fund.

“The endowed football scholarship will make an impact on the lives of many future student-athletes who seek to achieve a degree from West Georgia,” Clay added.
